St Athan village is pleasantly situated in the most fertile part of the Vale of Glamorgan, bordering upon the Bristol Channel. The scenery is beautifully diversified with hill and dale.
St Athan Village is full of history, from the Saint the village is named after, the church, castle ruins, listed buildings and the Berkerolles family.
St Athan is a large village, with a compact core around the church and former rectory site, extending westwards to West Orchard. There is an important deserted medieval village site at East Orchard, where a farm complex is associated with the remains of a medieval manor house belonging to the Berkerolles, and later to the Stradlings.
The exceptional cruciform church with its crossing tower in the village centre attests to the importance of the community and its lords. The church is substantially of 14th century and later appearance. The transcept houses the tombs of the Berkerolles. There is also a fine monument to Sir Roger Berkerolles, who died in 1351, as well as a tomb chest housing the remains of Roger’s father and mother within the church.
Visit St Athan village and enjoy its hidden treasures.
